Comprehensive Eye Exam

Progressive Family Eye Care provides the highest level of eye health and vision care to our patients of all ages in Plymouth, Canton, Northville, and the surrounding areas. A comprehensive eye exam is an important part of maintaining your eye health and preventing vision loss. During your eye exam in Plymouth, our experienced eye doctor will evaluate your vision and check for early signs of eye diseases or other conditions that can damage your eyesight.

What’s the difference between a vision screening and a comprehensive eye exam?

While a vision screening can help identify those at risk for vision problems, it cannot replace a comprehensive eye exam. At our office in Plymouth, MI, our optometrist performs an eye exam that assesses not only your vision but your eye health as well. Unlike the vision check performed by family physicians and pediatricians during a medical check-up, our exams are much more thorough. That’s why annual eye exams are essential for everyone to ensure they are seeing clearly and maintaining their vision for years to come.

What should you expect during a comprehensive eye exam?

There’s more to a comprehensive eye exam than just updating your prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses. Using advanced diagnostic technology, we can detect eye diseases and other medical conditions early when treatment is most effective. Your comprehensive eye exam will include many or all of these painless tests:

  • Assessment of visual acuity (the sharpness of your vision) and determining your correct eyeglass prescription.
  • Eye pressure measurement to help screen for glaucoma.
  • Visual field test to determine if you have blind spots or peripheral vision issues.
  • Cover test to identify crossed eyes or binocular vision problems.
  • Slit lamp exam to detect diseases and conditions affecting the front of the eye.
  • Optomap retinal image and dilated eye exam if necessary

Your exam may take up to an hour, depending on the number of tests needed to fully examine your eyes. Before each test, our eye doctor will explain what to expect and why each test is important.

Depending on the results, the treatment plan may involve something as simple as recommending eyeglasses, or something more serious like detecting the need for eye surgery. Using the information obtained from the eye exam, our eye doctor will recommend a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

How often should I get an eye exam?

We recommend our patients in Plymouth, Canton, and Northville get a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year. Even if you don’t currently have any vision problems, regular check-ups can be crucial in detecting and treating any issues before they become bigger problems that can affect your vision.

What are the benefits of a comprehensive eye exam?

One of the greatest benefits of comprehensive eye exams is the early detection of eye diseases, such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. Many eye diseases progress so slowly that you may not notice symptoms until considerable vision loss has occurred. Without treatment, these diseases can cause permanent damage. Regular eye exams help prevent vision loss and ensure treatment before your symptoms get worse.

Along with eye diseases, your eyes can also reveal hidden signs of other health conditions. Many medical conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, can affect the eyes before causing physical symptoms elsewhere in the body. During a comprehensive eye exam, our eye doctor can examine your eyes and detect changes in the retina or other structures that may indicate the presence of a medical condition.
